We are BIG fans of Rice Krispie Treats around here! The kids love to help me make them and REALLY love eating them. These Oreo Rice Krispie Treats are a fun twist on the original. Chocolatey, crunchy cookies and crisp rice cereal, ooey-gooey marshmallows, and cookie cream make these irresistible.
Jump to RecipePRO-TIP:
If there is ONE thing you learn from this recipe, I hope it is how to make nice soft rice krispie treats! The trick is to not overheat the marshmallows. I make my rice krispie treats in the microwave now and learned that tip from my Aunt Deb who always makes the best rice krispie treats. When I used to make them on the stovetop I would often overheat the butter/marshmallow mixture which makes for a very crunchy and sometimes just plain hard rice krispie treat. I don’t know about you, but I’m all about soft and gooey rice krispie treats. ***You can TOTALLY make these on the stovetop, just make sure to heat until just melted. 🙂
4 SIMPLE INGREDIENTS:
- 1 stick salted butter, 1/2 cup
- 16 oz. bag of marshmallows (small bags are 10 oz. large bags are 16 oz.)
- 2 cups Oreo cookies, crumbled
- 6 cups Rice Krispie Cereal
That’s it! Yes, we will definitely be using more butter and marshmallows than the traditional recipe. Trust me on this, it’s one major way we get the ooey-gooeyness. Yes. Ooey-gooeyness.
You will also need:
- A large microwave-safe bowl
- Spatula
- 9×13 inch pan
BUTTER:
Let’s start with the BUTTER! We are using SALTED butter here. If you use unsalted you will want to add a 1/2 tsp of salt. Microwave the butter until just melted. Make sure to use a microwave-safe bowl. We use a large glass bowl. (Be careful when taking it back and forth from the microwave because it can get HOT) While the butter is melting you will want to butter your 9×13-inch pan. (I had a helper do the buttering and they may have overdone it.) You can also just use cooking spray if you like.
Marshmallows:
You can use one large 16 oz. bag of marshmallows or two small 10 oz. bags. More marshmallows is never a bad thing. Pour the marshmallows into the melted butter and stir until all the marshmallows are coated. Place the bowl back in the microwave and cook in 30-second increments, stirring each time, until just melted. Do NOT overcook them.
I like to melt them until they are gooey but still a little lumpy. Now it’s time to pour in the rice krispies and the cookies. I mixed the rice krispies in first, then added the cookies, but you can totally just throw them all together at once. Sometimes we leave the cookies chunky like this, and other times we smash them more. It all depends on if you want chunks of cookie or just cookie crumbs throughout. Both ways are totally delish!
Stir everything together and gently press into your buttered pan. You can use a little butter on your hands, or use the butter wrapper from earlier to avoid a sticky mess.
Come and get your Oreo Rice Krispie Treats!
Let them cool before cutting into squares, or don’t, I’m not the Rice Krispie Treat police.
Check out that goodness. Better grab one quick before they disappear!
If your Oreo Rice Krispie Treats happen to last more than a minute, cover them and keep at room temperature. I hope yours are as ooey-gooey and delicious as these were!
