The Sweetest RED VELVET BLOSSOMS with Hershey’s Hugs

Sharing is caring!

These Red Velvet Blossoms are deliciously addicting! They are soft cookies with a yummy crunchy shell from the sanding sugar. The Hershey’s Hug in the middle not only makes them super cute, but it also adds more chocolatey sweetness. My six-year-old took a bite and said, “these are so good I don’t even know how many thumbs up they are!” That’s how we rate things, by thumbs up, and we have way more than two.

Here’s what you’ll need to make Red Velvet Blossoms:

  • 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
  • 1/2 C. brown sugar
  • 1/4 C. white sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/4 tsp. red food coloring gel
  • 1 cup flour1 1/2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup red sanding sugar
  • 18 Hershey’s Hugs candies, unwrapped

Let’s get these cookies started!

Add the softened butter and sugars to a mixing bowl and cream together.

Next add the yolk of one egg, the salt, and the vanilla to the batter and mix together.

Baking powder, cocoa, and food coloring are next. Add them and mix them all together. We use food coloring gel and 1/4 tsp. gave good color. Add as much or as little food coloring as you like.

The last step to make our yummy cookie dough is to add the flour and mix until just incorporated.

LET’S GET ROLLIN’:

Using a one-tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop the dough and roll it into balls in your palm. You should get approximately 18 cookie dough balls. Roll the cookie dough balls into the sanding sugar and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. We used red sanding sugar on some and hot pink on others, they both looked cute.

GIVE THEM A HUG:

While the cookies are still warm, gently press a Hershey’s Hug onto the top of each cookie. Allow the cookies to cool for 10 minutes then transfer them to a cooling rack. We added our hugs when the cookies were HOT and they got a little melty. It is a good idea to stick them in the fridge or freezer to cool them to prevent melting.

These cookies are a hit at our house and I’m sure they will be at yours as well. Logan had a really hard time waiting for me to take pics before he dug in! He already had chocolate all around his mouth from snitching the Hugs.
