Old Glory Fruit Pizza

Sharing is caring!

This Old Glory Fruit Pizza is the perfect dessert to wow your friends and family at your next Independence Day BBQ. It would also be perfect for Memorial Day or any time you are feeling patriotic!

Old Glory Fruit Pizza

My Mom has made this fruit pizza for as long as I can remember. We have made it with every type of fruit and she is ALWAYS asked for the recipe. On the 4th of July we usually stick to the strawberry and blueberry flag design.

Nice big slice.

The recipe for the crust on our Old Glory Fruit Pizza is the same dough as Grandma Coco’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, sans the chips. This recipe makes a big 11 x 17 cookie sheet, or you can halve the recipe and do it in a 9×13 pan.

TO MAKE OLD GLORY FRUIT PIZZA CRUST YOU WILL NEED:

  • 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt, or 1/2 tsp. if using salted butter
  • 4 cups flour
  • 11×17 cookie sheet

Start by creaming together the butter and sugars. I usually make the dough using my Kitchen Aid Mixer with paddle attachment, but my Mom just does it by hand in a mixing bowl.

Next add the eggs and vanilla and stir. (I usually add the baking soda and powder here but my Mom adds them to the flour.)

Add the baking soda and baking powder to 2 cups of flour and sift into the bowl and mix. Sift remaining 2 cups of flour onto clean counter top.

Now dump your cookie dough onto the flour and mix by hand until just combined.

Add to un-greased cookie sheet and spread it out. You can just use your hands for this or get fancy like my Mom and use a roller. 🙂

PRO TIP:

This next step is totally optional, but pretty genius. Mama uses a spoon on its side to angle down the edges of the dough. She does this because the dough will rise up the sides of the pan and this will help it not be as tall. Does that make sense?

Press down sides of the dough with a spoon.

Bake at 325 degrees for 14 to 16 minutes or until just golden brown.

While your cookie crust is cooling get your topping ingredients together.

FOR THE TOPPING OF YOUR OLD GLORY FRUIT PIZZA YOU WILL NEED:

  • 2 8 oz. packages of cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 8 oz. cartons of cool whip
  • 1 lb. fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
Extra Creamy Cool Whip and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

Cream together the cream cheese and powdered sugar first until no lumps remain.

FRUIT TIME:

Wash your blueberries and strawberries and dry them off. Cut off the tops of the strawberries and slice them up.

Fresh blueberries.
Fresh sliced strawberries.

PUT IT ALL TOGETHER:

We reserved about 3/4 cup of the topping to pipe the stars and stripes. This is totally optional, but we think it adds a little somethin’ somethin’. Add the reserved topping to a piping bag with a medium star tip and set aside. Once your cookie crust is cool you can go ahead and spread the cream cheese topping on it.

Now it’s time to design your flag. I started with the blueberries and created a rectangle. My blueberries varied in size A LOT!

To make the strawberry stripes I started by doing the top and bottom stripes, then the middle one. I started on the right side and over lapped the strawberries. This worked for me but I’m sure there is a smarter way. 🙂

Once you have all your berries in place you can call it good…or pipe on some stars and stripes!

I hadn’t planned on adding the white stripes between the strawberry stripes, but I had a little extra topping still in my bag so I went for it. Isn’t it adorable?
