HOMEMADE PIZZA ROLLS from scratch

Sharing is caring!

We had these yummy Homemade Pizza Rolls at a family get together and Levi asked me for a week if I would get the recipe from my sister-in-law, Kate. When I finally got the recipe we made them right away!

These Homemade Pizza Rolls are simple to make and you can change them up with lots of different fillings. The kids always love pepperoni, and my favorite is sausage and mushroom. We have also done plain cheese and canadian bacon and pineapple.

This recipe makes A LOT of pizza rolls, 36 in fact. Feel free to cut the recipe in half, but they freeze beautifully and take just 30 seconds to a minute to reheat in the microwave. They are PERFECT for kids to take in their lunches. We put them in individual sandwich bags in the freezer and they just grab one and throw it in their lunchbox and it is thawed by lunchtime. Eat it cold or microwave.

For the dough you will need:

  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 5 cups hot water
  • 3/4 cup potato flakes
  • 3 Tbsp. active dry yeast
  • 12 cups flour
  • butter, for the pans, your hands and the counter top

Let’s make that beautiful dough:

To a stand mixer add the oil, honey, salt, water, potato flakes, and 4 cups of the flour. Mix it all together.

These are the potato flakes we use. They are the magic ingredient that makes this dough stay so soft and yummy. Use any brand you like.

Add the yeast to the dough mixture and mix until incorporated.

Slowly add the remaining flour a few cups at a time and mix until the dough is smooth. Remove the dough to a clean, buttered counter with clean, buttered hands.

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’:

Split your lovely dough into 3 dough balls and roll out to about 12×24 inch rectangles.

Toppings, here’s what you need:

  • 1 (24oz) jar of marinara sauce. We have used Newman’s Own Sockarooni sauce because we love it, but it is pretty chunky so it’s not as spreadable. A smooth marinara or your favorite sauce will be great!
  • CHEESE! We like to use a mixture of Mozzarella and Colby Jack. Use any cheese you have. A bag with 8 cups will work for the recipe, unless you want more then go for it!
  • Pepperoni slices, cooked sausage crumbles, bacon, canadian bacon, pineapple, onions, mushrooms, or whatever your heart desires. Just an even layer over the cheese is great. You could even do taco pizza rolls with taco meat. Yum!

Let’s top ’em:

Spoon the marinara sauce evenly onto each dough rectangle and spread it out with the back of the spoon.

Add the cheese, as much as your little heart desires. Don’t worry, we added much more than this pictures makes you think.

Now top them any way you like.

Time to roll them up:

You will want to carefully start rolling from the wide side. When you get to the end, pinch the dough together to seal it.

Now just slice each of the three long rolls into 12 pieces. I usually start by cutting it in half, then the halves in half, then those four pieces into thirds. It just makes it easier to cut them evenly for me. I used a sharp knife and had no problem, but you can get a really nice, clean cut using unflavored dental floss. Place the rolls on a large, buttered baking sheet and allow to rise until double in size. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until lightly golden brown.

If you have a big, fancy convection oven like my Mom, you can bake all three pans at the same time. We just make sure to put each pan on the top rack for the last couple minutes to get them to brown up.

These are yummy eaten fresh out of the oven, but they are also so good leftover and reheated, and in my opinion, are equally good frozen and reheated.

You can dip them in extra marinara sauce, ranch, or eat them plain.
