REFURBISHED Flower Pots using spray paint

Sharing is caring!

If you know me at all, you know I LOVE paint. You can update just about anything with a fresh coat of paint and it can change the entire look and feel of things. These Refurbished Flower Pots started out a little lackluster. Now they are bright and cheery and it only took a little paint and time.

BEFORE:

We had these two BIG flower pots at our house and they were ready for an update. On a total whim, I went to my spray paint collection in the garage and grabbed a few cans and got to work.

TEAM WORK:

First we had to get the GIANT terracotta pot to the front yard from the back yard. Emma, 14, and Levi, 10, worked on rolling it for me while I cleaned up and painted the red pot in the front yard. They worked hard, but also smart as they removed most of the dirt first. I cleaned the red pot with a little soap and water. Once the pot was dry, I primed it with a spray primer. Primer seemed like a good idea because the surface was shiny and smooth. I just used what I had on hand and I’m a big fan of Rustoleum paints.

PAINT:

I did this right on the front sidewalk with a little paper down to protect it. Next I grabbed a can of Krylon Metallic Rust spray paint. I sprayed the top of the pot about one third of the way down in an uneven pattern. Then I grabbed a can of RUST-O-LEUM SATIN Lagoon and did the middle section and finished with a darker navy blue on the bottom. I did this so quickly, it probably took me less than 10 minutes to spray the whole thing.

I was very happy with the results and then my husband came home and told me it looked like an Easter egg! What does he know anyway? 😉

I planted a bunch of things in it and have even been able to keep them alive all summer! The red wasn’t bad, but I love these colors.

TERRA COTTA:

I really loved the look of this terracotta pot, but wanted it to match better with the other blue pot I had sprayed. Once the kids had rolled it from the backyard, I put it on some paper on the lawn and got spraying. I used the same RUST-OLEUM AMERICAN ACCENTS SATIN lagoon. It is such a pretty turquoise color. I used the same primer on this as first as well.

WHITE WASH:

Because this paint was so shiny, I white washed it with some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I added a small amount of paint to a cup with lots of water and painted it on. Lincoln had a good time helping me with this part. He helped to wipe some of the paint off on the top part of the pot, he should have also wiped the dirt off his face. 😉 I liked the look of it with more white on the bottom because of texture, so I left it without wiping.

Look how beautiful those colors are! I actually took a small piece of sand paper and sanded some of the edges to show the terracotta through the blue.

We moved this giant pot to the front flower bed near our front porch and planted the same plants in it. Ivan and Lincoln were super helpful getting the dirt back into the pot with a Tonka truck.

I hope you like our Refurbished Flower Pots, even if one of them might slightly resemble an Easter egg. 🙂
