Jingle Bell Christmas Door Hanger

Sharing is caring!

This year I wanted to create something unique for my front door for Christmas. While perusing the aisles of Hobby Lobby, my hubby found these beautiful jingle bells on a burgundy leather strap and they were 50% off so they only cost me 5 bucks! I knew it would be perfect for my “wreath” but couldn’t picture it on a round wreath. A square wreath has been on my to-do list so I started brain storming.

Buffalo check print is so popular this year and I have always really loved it. The only ribbon I could find was red and didn’t match the jingle bells so I grabbed a 12×12 piece of scrapbook paper with the idea of putting it in a frame.

The frame:

Hobby Lobby has tons of picture frames to choose from but I opted for an unfinished chunky wood frame with no glass. This frame was only $10.00 and I used a 40% off coupon so I got it for 6 bucks!

Black seemed like the obvious paint choice to match the paper, but I think a dark brown would have looked great as well. Two coats of black craft paint was all it took.

A little fur:

I knew that I wanted to add a white faux fur around the frame to give the Jingle Bell Christmas Door Hanger a bit of a Santa Clause vibe. Hobby Lobby was running low on lots of their ribbons and I could only find 2 rolls of a different faux fur that wouldn’t have quite gone around the frame. A nice lady in the fabric department found this faux fur trim that I ended up using. It was just barely long enough to go around the frame, in fact, it doesn’t quite touch together on the corner I started and ended on, but it is covered by the ginormous bow.

The Bow:

I chose 3 different ribbons to make this bow. It needed a little bit of brown somewhere to tie in with the bells so I chose this rustic brown ribbon along with a burgundy ribbon to match the leather bell strap. Buffalo check ribbon would have looked great with this, but like I mentioned I wasn’t able to find the right color. The stripes looked great with everything so I went with that. The hubby was with me when I bought the ribbon so he bought one roll and used a 40% off coupon and I bought the other two and got 40% off one roll.

Many, many, many bows have been made by my hands. Bows are super frustrating to make when you are first learning to make them, but it does get easier. After working at 6 flower shops I think I have the hang of it. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube for different styles of bows. Do a little research and practice. This one I tied with all 3 ribbons at the same time. I couldn’t find my wire, of course, so I use a piece of wired greenery garland to hold it together.

Pretty stuff:

I’ve mentioned before that I scored a bunch of really nice faux pine picks and swags at a yard sale in Texas one year and I’m still using them in different ways. These were some that I had on hand but you can find a ton of different varieties at your local craft store or online. This was two large picks that I decided to cut apart with my wire cutters so I could spread them out a little.

Putting it all together:

After the frame was dry, I put the paper in the back and glued the faux fur around the edge using a hot glue gun. You want to make sure to get close to the edge of the ribbon so that it will lay flat. Do small sections at a time so the glue doesn’t dry before you can get the ribbon in place. I hate when that happens.

Next I glued on the jingle bell strap and the bow on top using my hot glue gun. I held the bow tightly in place until I was sure that the glue was dried.

Finally, I took the pine pieces and glued them in place under the bow where I thought they looked good. One important step when working with artificial greenery picks like this is to bend the different pieces out to add some negative space. They are usually pretty bunched up when you buy them or after they have been stored.

Finishing touches:

This cute little sleigh ride sign finished off our Jingle Bell Christmas Door Hanger. This sign came on a wooden stake, that I broke off, and was just 98 cents at WalMart! There are so many cute inexpensive signs you could use for this. The sleigh seemed to go along with the jingle bells and Santa fur nicely. I glued a piece of ribbon to the back of the sign to attach it inside the bow.

Time to show it off:

This Jingle Bell Christmas Door Hanger came together very quickly and we love the way it turned out. It is perfect for your front door or just to hang on the wall inside. The possibilities are endless with a frame, paper and some ribbon. We will probably try something similar for other holidays and seasons. Oh…and it is much more lightweight than it appears. To hang my Jingle Bell Christmas Door Hanger on my door, I made a loop of ribbon and glued it to the back of the frame. I used a Command hook on the door to hang it on. We are in a rental house right now so we don’t have the most beautiful door.  This would be even more beautiful on a dark wood door, or black door, or red door….or pretty much any color door. I think the fur blends in a little too well on my off white door.

We hope you liked our Jingle Bell Christmas Door Hanger. PLEASE share a picture with us on our Facebook page if you make one for yourself. We love to see your creativity!
