Interchangeable Floral Door Hanger

Sharing is caring!

We absolutely LOVE the way this Interchangeable Floral Door Hanger turned out. Changing out the floral piece for each season or holiday is so easy and fun.

Interchangeable Floral Door Hanger. Galvanizer metal with wood letters spelling Hello Friends. Floral designs at the bottom in pink ranunculus and succulents, Second option of red and white floral with black hearts and black and white gingham bow.

The trick to this Interchangeable Floral Door Hanger is the use of magnets at the bottom of the floral arrangements which allow you to switch them out effortlessly. We also love that you can save on cost by having the one galvanized piece with lots of options of floral.

Here is what we used to create it:

  • galvanized round metal decor tray, we bought ours at Hobby Lobby
  • drill to drill holes in the metal
  • ribbon or rope to hang
  • dry floral foam
  • E6000 glue
  • Hello Friends letters, or Welcome, whatever you like.
  • white paint
  • strong magnets
  • hot glue gun and sticks
  • flowers and greenery in your choice
  • wire cutters
  • scissors

Let’s make it:

The first thing you will want to do is drill holes in the metal so that you can hang it. My Dad did this part for me. I marked on each side where I wanted the holes. I thought they should be in the middle from front to back, but when it hangs the bottom sticks out a little. It would work better to have the holes toward the back so that it will hang flat against the door or wall. Make sure the holes are big enough for whatever rope you use, but not too big that it will put through with a knot in it. Next I painted the letters. I just used a white craft paint and craft brush. You could do this many ways. Use spray paint, mod podge a cute textured paper on the letters etc.

Once the letters are painted and dry it is time to glue them to the metal piece. E6000 is a very strong, permanent glue. This is what we chose to use. Place the letters where they look good, then put glue on the back and set them in place. This glue does take some time to dry, but it is worth it. We placed a heavy book on top of the letters to hold them in place while they dried overnight. If you plan to hang this inside, hot glue would probably work fine to attach the letters. But on a front door in the weather, hot glue probably wouldn’t hold.

You will want to cut the dry floral foam small enough to fit on the lip of the galvanized tray. We kept it flat on the bottom and hot glued the magnets on each side so they would touch the metal. If I were to do it again, I would cut the bottom of the foam to curve and fit more snugly on the tray. I hope that makes sense.

Floral Design:

Now is the fun part! We chose these gorgeous pink ranunculus and succulents for our first floral piece. Aren’t they gorgeous?! To design the flowers I hung the whole thing on a handle on the kitchen cabinets. You could also use an easle or design it while lying flat. Just make sure to hold it up to see how it will look on the door or wall so that all the foam is covered and it looks good. You can also start by covering the foam with a little moss. I like to start by cutting the stems into smaller pieces that work for this type of small design. I start with the larger focal flowers, then fill in with greenery and smaller accent/filler flowers. If you are not quite confident in floral design, wait until the end to glue the flowers in place.

The second design we chose was a Valentine’s Day one. We also have one for the fall that is not pictured. When designing this, I also took the foam off the metal and used leaves to cover remaining foam. I love the look of the greenery hanging down on both of these.

Helpful tip:

We loved the metal hearts we found at Hobby Lobby, but the red color was not quite right so we just quickly spray painted them black and loved the result. They looked great and tied in the black and white checkered bow.

Another fun way to switch things up with this Interchangeable Floral Design Hanger is to switch out the ribbon to hang it with. For the succulent design we used rope and switched it out for ribbon that coordinated with the ribbon bow on the Valentine design. To attach the ribbon or rope to hang this we just pushed them through the hole and tied the ends in a knot. Easy to remove and change out.

We hope you liked this tutorial and that it gives you some inspiration to create something similar for your home. We LOVE to see pictures of your creations so please share with us!
