Instant Pot Ham and Navy Bean Soup

Sharing is caring!

Our Ham and Navy Bean Soup is super simple to throw together and you don’t even have to soak the beans thanks to the pressure cooker! The ham shank or ham hock, whichever you choose to use, gives this soup an incredible smokey flavor. The ham along with the tender beans and veggies make this a perfect one-pot meal.

My Dad likes to buy ham shanks at Winco. They are a good price and have lots of meat on them. He has often brought me a ham shank when visiting. I think he does this in hopes I’ll make something yummy for him with it. The last time my parents visited we had this Ham and Navy Bean Soup and it was a hit! It was a little spicy for my Dad’s taste but you can definitely adjust that to your liking.

Here’s what you’ll need to make our Ham and Navy Bean Soup:

  • 1 pound dry navy beans, rinsed and sorted
  • 1 large smoked ham shank or ham hock
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 6 cups water or broth, we use Better than Bouillon Chicken
  • 1 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper, optional
  • salt and pepper to taste,
  • 1 bunch green onions, sliced, for topping

You can use either a smoked ham shank or ham hock for this ham and navy bean soup. We like to use ham shank because they have more meat on them. If you don’t have either of those this would be a great way to use up some leftover ham.

Let’s get cooking!

Press the sauté button on your Instant Pot or similar function on another pressure cooker. Once it is HOT add a tablespoon of oil and the onion, celery, and carrots.

Sauté the veggies for just a couple of minutes then add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, then pour in the broth and hit the cancel button to turn off the saute function.

FLAVOR TOWN:

Next, add your rinsed beans to the pot and stir. Top with the ham shank and seasoning.

UNDER PRESSURE:

Close the lid and ensure that the valve is closed on the top. Cook on high pressure for 45 minutes then let naturally release pressure for 15 minutes. Once the time is done turn the valve to venting and release any remaining steam and open the lid. It should smell amazing right about now!

FINISHING TOUCHES:

Carefully remove the ham to a cutting board and chop it into pieces while removing any bones and skin. It will be fall-apart tender. Return the chopped ham to the pot.

Stir everything together and you’re ready to eat!
