DIY Floral and Fabric Patriotic Wreath

Sharing is caring!

I am in Utah visiting my parents and decided to create this DIY Floral and Fabric Patriotic Wreath for my Mom’s front door. We made a trip to Hobby Lobby and got everything we needed. She picked the fabric and we went from there.

Pictures just don’t do it justice. Her door is 8 feet tall so we wanted to create something that would stand out. It even looks great from the road.

SUPPLIES NEEDED TO CREATE OUR DIY FLORAL AND FABRIC PATRIOTIC WREATH:

DIY Patriotic Wreath Supplies

We started with just 2 stems of artificial blue delphinium, 2 stems of blue berries and 2 stems of small white flowers.

Berries and white sprays.

PRO TIP:

Hobby Lobby often has their floral supplies for 50% off. You can save a bundle if you watch for sales and shop ahead. We also always use their 40% off one item when we go. You can find the coupon right on their website. The fabric by the yard was 30% off when we went and their patriotic section was also 30% off. We got EVERY item on sale!

STEP ONE: FABRIC

We only needed a half yard of fabric to stretch across our wreath. My Mom is an amazing seamstress and very quickly sewed the edge of the fabric so that it would lay nicely. This is totally optional though and would have worked to just fold the edge over. Ironing it will help to hold the fold if you don’t want to sew it. I took the piece of fabric and made a tuft at one end and wired it.

Wired tuft at one end of the fabric.

Next I wired the tuft end to the wreath. Nothing fancy, just make sure it’s secure.

Next I stretched the fabric across the wreath and pulled it around the edge and turned the wreath over to the back. Using my hot glue gun I did a section at a time. Pull tight and glue as you go across. Make sure the fabric is gathered nicely on the front side.

Hot glue to attach the fabric to the wreath.

It looked like this from the front.

STEP TWO: BOW

Next I took my 2 wired ribbons and made a large bow. There are lots of tutorials on bows out there. This would also be cute with a large shoelace bow. I just make loops until it looks good and wire the back. Hot glue does the trick to secure the bow. Just hold in place for a minute or so until the glue has cooled and the bow is secure. I used quite a bit of glue.

STEP 3: FLOWERS

I started with the largest flowers, the blue delphinium, and created my line. One going up from the bow and the other going down. It looked best bent around the curve of the wreath so I wired them in place in the middle of the flower after I had hot glued them under the bow.

I cut apart the berries and used half above the bow and half below. Later I ended up cutting them a little more to spread them out. You want to make sure when you are using artificial flowers to really utilize each piece and make sure they are seen.

The small white flowers ended up being trickier to use than I thought they would be. I chopped them apart and used little pieces throughout the design.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

After I got the flag just where I wanted it, it was time to get it on the door. It looked so good…

Then…..the next day we went back to Hobby Lobby to buy flowers for the cemetery and I saw some little red flowers and said to my Mom, “Those are supposed to be in your wreath!” We hadn’t originally picked any red flowers because they needed to be more of a cranberry color to match the fabric and all we saw were more of an orange red. These were perfect and really brought our DIY Floral and Fabric Patriotic Wreath together. I LOVE when that happens.

We would love to see pictures of what you create for your patriotic door. We are grateful to live in this BEAUTIFUL country and for those who sacrificed for the many freedoms that we enjoy.
